Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions for Waverly Belmont

  • What time does school begin and dismiss?
School begins at 8am each day. School doors open at 7:45am. If your child is eating breakfast, the cafeteria doors open at 7:35am. Students will remain in the cafeteria until 7:45am. At that time, they will be dismissed to their classrooms. Breakfast ends at 7:55am. If students arrive in their classroom past 8am, they will be marked tardy.
  • If my child is a walker, where should I pick him or her up? What about a car rider?
If you indicated that your child is a walker for dismissal, they are dismissed through the library doors (on the Caruthers Ave. side of the building). At dismissal time, all kindergarten walkers are escorted to the library. Parents will see the line forming outside the building to pick up your student via their dismissal number.

If you indicated that your child is a car rider, you will enter the school grounds via 11th Ave. All students will be issued a dismissal number. Please have the number displayed in your dash. A school employee will come by your car and ask for you student’s dismissal number. Just as walkers, all kindergarten car riders are escorted out by a teacher.Whichever way you specify that your child goes home, they will be sent to that specific location unless you’ve notified the office or your child’s teacher. So, if you indicated your child is a walker and you go through the car rider line to pick them up, you’ll be asked to circle around the building to the library to grab them. Please avoid changing or having inconsistent dismissal schedules.
  • What do I need if I am entering the school during school hours (lunch, school parties)
To enter the school building, you must go to the front of the school building (by the flagpole) and push the button on the door to be buzzed in. For your first visit, you are required to bring your driver’s license to be scanned into Metro’s system. You will be printed a badge that must be worn at all times while you are in WB’s building. After your first visit, you will not need your license, you can just tell our office staff your name and they will print you a badge.
  • What is SSA?
Standard School Attire is the required clothing for all Waverly Belmont students. Students must wear a solid, collared shirt and black, khaki, navy pants, shorts, skirts or dresses. Leggings may not be worn as pants. Waverly Belmont Spirit Wear shirts can be worn any day of the week with SSA bottoms. Spirit Wear can be purchased at any time by emailing [email protected]
  • What time is lunch?
Kindergarten lunch starts around 10:35am, but your child’s teacher will have a more specific time as to when their class eats.
  • Is there assistance with lunches?
Kindergarten classroom teachers walk their classes to lunch every day. Teachers will help students that are buying lunch through the lunch line. If a student brings their lunch, a cafeteria monitor will circle around and help them open tops, baggies, etc. The cafeteria is unable to keep any foods cold or heat any food up. Teachers will pick students up in the cafeteria once their lunchtime is complete.
  • What does a kindergarten day look like?
Your child’s teacher will give a more specific schedule once school starts.
Arrival, Morning Meeting, ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies, Recess, Lunch, Specials, Response to Intervention time (RTI), Dismissal

  • Will my student have access to the restroom all day?
Each kindergarten classroom has its own bathroom. Procedures will be set up in each classroom for using the restroom, but students are allowed to use the restroom as they need.
  • Do students get recess?
Students will receive a scheduled recess daily, along with multiple brain breaks. During those brain breaks, students may move around the room or be at their desks decompressing - whichever they choose! Kindergarten is full of movement, activity and social exploration, so our students will not be sitting at a desk for any extended period of time.
  • How many times a week will my student have P.E?
Students will go to Special area classes daily for an hour.
Related Arts are: P.E., Spanish, Art, Music, Wellness. Each class will go to each special area once a week.
  • Can I walk my child to their class?
At the beginning of the year we welcome parents to walk their student to class. Making new routines can be difficult and we want to make the process as easy as possible! We do ask that if you walk your student to class in the first weeks that you let your student go through the arrival procedures (unpacking, turning folders in, etc.) on their own. We foster independence from the first day of school and they will learn their routines faster if they are allowed to complete them on their own! Toward the end of August, Kindergarten will have an “Independence Day”. On that day, parents will be asked not to walk their student INTO the classroom anymore. You are always welcome to walk your student to the door of their classroom, but you will be asked to say goodbye there! If you choose to walk your student into school after Independence Day, you will be required to stop in the front office and get a badge. If you choose not to walk your student in, staff will be lining the hallways to ensure that each kinder makes it to his or her classroom!
  • When will I know which class my child is in?
Waverly Belmont has a Roster Reveal/Meet the Teacher event the night before school starts! You are encouraged to come to school, meet your student’s teacher and take a look around their new classroom! We suggest bringing school supplies that night so that you don’t have to worry about bringing them in the first day of school. (School supply lists will be posted on WB’s PTO website in July).
  • Is there time throughout the day for snack?
Snack will be each afternoon in kindergarten. Many kindergarten classes do group snack so you do not have to worry about packing a snack each day for your students. More specific information will be given at the beginning of the school year.
  • What is the procedure for bringing in treats for my child’s birthday?
Each classroom has a special way of celebrating student birthdays. Our school does have a no cupcake (or cake) policy for birthdays. If you choose to bring in a treat for your student’s birthday, you are encouraged to bring something healthy and/or non-edible (bookmark, pencil, etc.). This must be during lunch. We celebrate birthday students with a sticker and they can come out of SSA for the day.
